Our client approached us to add a new purpose-built music studio on the roof of her penthouse apartment.
As part of our signature visioning process, we examined the opportunities and limitations inherent in the proposed rooftop location, as well as the body corporate rules for new building works. We also investigated the best ways of accommodating a range of different instruments and equipment, and how to manage access to the space through the penthouse, for private music tuition students.
Then we arrived at a design solution that would best meet our client’s needs and conform to the permitted use of the roof space.
By repurposing part of the existing rooftop terrace – which had previously been underutilised – we were able to install a new dedicated space for music, while also providing appropriate levels of privacy from neighbouring tall buildings.
We carefully considered the acoustic treatments – and used custom acoustic panels accentuated with bright pops of colour to highlight the creative vibe of the studio – to mitigate against noise transfer to nearby residences.
With tinted glazing on three sides, and a generous skylight overhead, the music studio takes advantage of plentiful natural light and natural ventilation.
It also enjoys elevated views of the city skyline, creating an inspiring environment for creating, enjoying and teaching music.
