Bracken Ridge State High School
Library
The brief for the rejuvenation of the library at Bracken Ridge State High School called for a contemporary space that is more user friendly, that provides meeting spaces and flexible teaching areas, storage and access for books and other resources, as well as an IT hub for students.
-
This major library refurbishment created a more comfortable, functional, and welcoming space for students of all abilities, thanks to our application of research-led design principles.
The design included:
Reconfiguring the Library layout,
New reception desk and computer benches,
New ceiling, lights and fans throughout,
Increase ducted a/c system to include new rooms,
New carpet,
New interior colours and full internal repaint, and
Reconfiguring power and data points.
-
By reconfiguring and rearranging key library functions – such as installing a central information kiosk for library staff and creating separate learning areas, complete with whiteboards and projectors – we were able to improve the visual appeal and performance of this much-loved space at the school.
The new design maximises the use of natural light to create a more welcoming space. By lowering the height of loose furniture, we created a more open plan with better visual sightlines and connections between and across spaces.
The addition of a new Indigenous learning corner – with books and learning resources, and artworks and artefacts – provides easy access to First Nations knowledge for all students.
-
Drawing upon our research and findings from previous specialist and mainstream education projects, we supported the school to investigate the requirements of a contemporary resource centre, and helped them to create a space that is flexible, welcoming and inclusive.
By referencing evidence from our own past projects as well as academic research, we expanded the brief to prioritise inclusivity for the diverse needs of all students.
The final result delivered significant dividends for the students who use the library, and exceeded the expectations of the school and library staff.
